ALBIZZIA: THE TREE OF HAPPINESS: A safe herbal alternative for feelings of melancholy and sadness.  Michael Tierra L.Ac., O.M.D., Founder of the American Herbalists Guild

Albizzia julibrissin is known as the "tree of collective happiness" by the Chinese because of its ability to "promote joy, assuage sorrow, brighten the eye, enliven the heart, as described in the most revered herbal texts written nearly 500 years ago. Long before that time, Chinese people have recommended its use for anyone who is suffering from sadness or grief as a result of severe disappointment or loss. In a word, the flowers and bark from this beautiful tree, known as the mimosa tree, may be the oldest and most potent antidepressant herb known. Based on its indications and use in contemporary herbal practice, it’s no wonder that some contemporary American Chinese herbalists have dubbed it "herbal prozac."

Most people have heard of the many adverse reactions resulting from the use and abuse of chemical anti-depressants. In fact these have become one of the five most prescribed class of drugs. The fact is that many, including those in the medical profession are beginning to question whether they are not being over prescribed as we hear of antidepressants being increasingly given to teens and young children.

Clinically the bark and flowers of albizzia has a well deserved herb reputation for the treatment of melancholy or what the Chinese regard as ‘spirit disorders.’ This includes a wide range of psychological and related emotional imbalances.

For those who are seeking to quit antidepressants, they should consult with their health practitioner. Quite possibly the gradual substitution of Albizzia or Albizzia Plus 10 formula can offer a safe and effective alternative at least for what is clinically termed as mild depression. (See more information and actual cases at www.Planetherbs.com).

The herb is effective for chronic or occasional short term bouts of sadness or depression. Albizzia effectively treats melancholy, nervousness, irritability and related symptoms such as anxiety and insomnia. It will not affect libido. In fact, for those whose sexual dysfunction is emotionally related albizzia can be very effective.

Recommended daily dosage 30 to 60 drops two or three times daily between meals. Albizzia Plus 10 which combines Albizzia with the most revered of all Chinese formulas for depression ("Xiao Yao Wan") has a broader hormonal action making it especially useful for depression associated with hormonal imbalances associated with menstruation or change of life phases in either men or women. While either will have a noticeable positive effect, for more complex problems taking 30 drops of each three times daily will have a quicker effect.

Finally, albizzia is considered so safe that the leaves of the albizzia tree are considered edible by the Chinese and there are no known contraindications for its use. While it promotes a calm, easy going state and even promotes a more restful sleep, it will not cause daytime drowsiness. Despite this and to be on the safe side, one should not use it directly before driving or operating heavy machinery.

Questions and answers regarding those who are considering taking Albizzia:

Q. Can I take Albizzia or any herbal antidepressant along with anti depression medication?
A. The real question should be why you would want to take both. There is no question that some people absolutely require anti-depressant medication and should never consider switching unless they are under supervision of a qualified and experienced practitioner. However, considering the vast majority of individuals with relatively mild symptoms and who are prescribed anti depression medication, it may be appropriate for them to reevaluate their need and use herbs such as albizzia instead. However, there is no immediate concern in taking both so long as the antidepressant medication is gradually tapered off over a period of at least 2 weeks to a month. In the meantime, one should begin with 30 drops of Albizzia single or Albizzia Plus 10 and gradually increase to 1 teaspoon two or three times daily. After stopping the anti depression medication, consider lowering the dose of albizzia to a maintenance level of 30 drops two or three times daily. Of course, all of this is best done under the guidance of a qualified practitioner.

Q. I have recently experienced a severe loss and it has left me in a nearly perpetual state of melancholic depression and insomnia, which albizzia product is best for me?
A. This is the classic use for taking Albizzia Single herb product. It is best to begin with a low dose to determine tolerance and as soon as possible 'load' by taking a teaspoon three or four times daily for two or three days. Then cut back to 30 drops three times daily.

Q. I tend towards severe depression, moodiness and irritability especially associated with my menstrual cycle (this could include any physiological change such as menopause or similar physical changes in men). Which albizzia product is best for me?
A. Probably Albizzia Plus 10 because this formula has the additional effect of helping the liver to discharge unneeded stress hormones and in general, regulate hormonal fluctuations.

Q. Can I take too much albizzia?
A. There are no known toxicity levels or contraindications. This does not mean that some individuals may not have an individual or what is known as an ‘idosyncratic’ reaction -- Albizzia has a history of thousands of years of safe and esteemed use for depression, sadness, anxiety, nervousness and associated symptoms including insomnia. The Chinese materia medica classify it as 'spirit calming' and is considered to be very safe. Despite its strange flavor, it is also regarded as a digestive tonic. Start low with 10 drops two or three times daily and after accessing your reaction, increase to the full dose.

Q. Can I take both Albizzia Single and Albizzia Plus 10 together?
A. For many this is recommended. Albizzia Plus 10 has a broader action, working on all systems of the body through the liver. For those with more profound depression, both may be taken together approximately 30 drops of each which would be a full teaspoon three times a day. Whenever possible, it is best to begin with a low ‘testing’ dose and gradually increase over three days. Again for individuals with more severe depression, it is a good idea to be under the guidance of a qualified practitioner.

Q. How long will it take before I notice the effects?
A. This is also very individualistic. Its not unusual for some to report a subtle calming effect after even a single dose for others it may take up to three days. Many are so distracted that only after using it regularly over two weeks can they look back and see that in fact there has been a ‘shift’ in their mood patterns. Herbs are not drugs, and have more pervasive ‘normalizing effects. Be patient, albizzia really does work for everyone.

Q. How long will a two ounce bottle last?
A. It depends on the use. Those with clinical depression probably will use about 2 ounces per week. Others find benefit from occasional use and a bottle would last considerably longer. Albizzia tincture now available in a four ounce size.

Albizzia products are available in 2 and 4 ounce sizes at: www.planetherbs.com
