Amanda McQuade Crawford, BA, DipPhyto, MNIMH, MNZAMH, RH (AHG)
A Consultant Medical Herbalist, improving quality control within the natural products industry. Previously she was in private practice for many years in Beverly Hills, and Ojai, California, where she grew, gathered, and made most of her plant medicines surrounded by orange groves, oaks and avocados. Amanda has studied and taught about medicinal herbs all over the world, in the rain forest of the Amazon, in Rio de Janeiro, in Asia from Beijing to the Mekong River, in Europe, Australia, Russia, Mexico, and every state in the U.S. She was appointed the Senior Clinical Tutor at Canterbury College in Christchurch, New Zealand, where she spent 2005 integrating their curriculum, new research and clinical practice. Amanda has a degree in Phytotherapy (Herbal Medicine), now equated with a BSc, from Britain’s College of Phytotherapy (Phyto, Greek for “plant”), and a BA in Medieval History from Vassar College. She was a founding member of the American Herbalists Guild, a professional organization committed to protecting wild plants while providing excellence in natural medicine to all those who want it. Amanda has taught at numerous North American hospitals and medical schools, from Bastyr in Seattle to Temple in Philly. She contributed to two recent books on natural medicine, The New Menopause Book, edited by Taliaferri et al, and the text, Traditional Medicines for Modern Times: Antidiabetic Plants, edited by Amala Soumyanath, CRC Press. Amanda is also the author of two popular books on women’s health, The Herbal Menopause Book and Herbal Remedies for Women. She currently explores for urban weeds and grows an organic herb garden in the wilds of Los Angeles, California.
Bill Schoenbart
Practicing traditional Chinese medicine since 1991, when he earned a Masters degree in TCM. He is currently doing research as a candidate for a doctoral degree in 2008. His specialty is in herbal medicine, working with both Chinese and Western herbs. Bill has practiced TCM in California, Hawaii, and North Carolina. He currently teaches TCM medical theory and herbalism at Five Branches Institute in Santa Cruz, California, and also maintains a clinical practice. He is also a contributing author to the American Herbal Pharmacopeia, and has written two books on Chinese medicine.
Bill works as a research consultant in the dietary supplement industry. He has been a member of the board of trustees of the American Herbal Products Association, where he worked to protect the public's access to herbs, as well as to maintain quality standards for herbal medicine. Bill has given presentations on herbal medicine at various international conferences, such as the International Conference on Modernization of Chinese Medicine (Hong Kong) and the World Congress on Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (Thailand).
Darren Huckle
As well as being an herbalist and acupuncturist practicing a fusion of Western and Chinese herbalism, Darren has a variety of experience teaching about herbs and the energetics of healing for over 8 years. Darren teaches a variety of courses in Santa Cruz including courses on Chinese and Western Herbalism, Herbal Gardening, Golden Sheild Qi Gong, and also leads herb walks and tours for UCSC's holistic health and recreation departments. An avid gardener, Darren enjoys teaching the uses of medicinal ' weeds' , and has established and managed herb gardens throughout Santa Cruz County. Darren Huckle is a graduate of Five Branches institute where he recieved his Masters in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Darren has studied western herbalism at the American School of Herbalism and various other venues for the last 12 years. Darren is a graduate of UC Santa Cruz where he obtained a Bachelors in Environmental Science focusing on Agroecology and Natural History. He also completed the Apprenticeship in Ecological Horticulture program at the UCSC Farm &Garden, and worked closely with Christopher Hobbs at the Living Farmacy herbal gardens
