Medicinal Uses http://www.planetherbs.com/lesley-tierras-blogs/what-about-quince-medicinal-uses.html http://www.planetherbs.com/lesley-tierras-blogs/what-about-quince-medicinal-uses.html After writing about the various types of citrus and their uses I thought about using other fruits as medicine. My mind turned to quince, since our wild lemon tree looks very similar to it. However, quince is not in the same family as citrus, Rutaceae (the rue family), but in Rosaceae, shared with apples and pears. The raw fruit is hard and unpalatable, but when cooked the flesh turns a brownish pink and has a pleasant flavor. There are lots of recipes using it throughout the ages and its typical use is as a food. I knew the Chinese used…]]> ltierra@planetherbs.com (Lesley Tierra) Lesley Tierra's Blogs Tue, 10 Mar 2015 00:00:00 +0000 The Low-FODMAP Elimination Diet http://www.planetherbs.com/michaels-blog/the-low-fodmap-elimination-diet.html http://www.planetherbs.com/michaels-blog/the-low-fodmap-elimination-diet.html My last two blog posts attempted to answer two questions: 1. Is it really necessary for all or even the majority of the 18 million people who are eliminating all wheat and gluten from their diet to do so? 2. Are the adverse reactions to certain foods including those containing gluten that people are claiming to have really due to an old condition scientifically recognized in the early 20th century and known as dysbiosis – bacterial gut imbalance? The questions were spurred on by my personal feelings of “another condition that is supposed to be the cause of all or…]]> mtierra@planetherbs.com (Michael Tierra) Michaels Blog Tue, 13 Jan 2015 00:00:00 +0000 Perceived Gluten Sensitivity and Traditional Herbal Approaches http://www.planetherbs.com/michaels-blog/perceived-gluten-sensitivity-and-traditional-herbal-approaches.html http://www.planetherbs.com/michaels-blog/perceived-gluten-sensitivity-and-traditional-herbal-approaches.html Gluten sensitivity and the TCM Spleen The unique concept of the ‘Spleen’ in TCM encompasses far more than the standard Western physiological organ. The TCM Spleen is a Yin organ whose function is described as “transformation and transportation.” What is transformed is food, air and water and these are transported via the blood stream to all the cells of the body. The Spleen represents the innate metabolic potential enabling deep level transformation of food and assimilation of energy. The Stomach, the Spleen’s Yang counterpart, is responsible for “ripening and rotting” or the initial stages of digestion. Spleen Yang is similar…]]> mtierra@planetherbs.com (Michael Tierra) Michaels Blog Thu, 11 Dec 2014 00:00:00 +0000 Cooking with Herbs for the Holidays http://www.planetherbs.com/lesley-tierras-blogs/cooking-with-herbs-for-the-holidays.html http://www.planetherbs.com/lesley-tierras-blogs/cooking-with-herbs-for-the-holidays.html The holidays are fast approaching and before you know it, you might need to start cooking up a storm. But what if you’re tired of the same old recipes or you want to try something new? Look no further. I’ve got several ideas here to spice up your holiday eating as well as expand your culinary herbal horizons. And at the very end I’ve included several after-dinner digestive aids to prevent that awful sluggishness most of us feel after over-eating holiday meals. Here, I'll discuss remedies for those patterns. SPLEEN DIET There are many great treatments and herbs for strengthening the Spleen, but it all starts with what we eat since the Spleen and Stomach Organs are directly in charge of breaking down and metabolizing food and drink. This metabolic kitchen is like a pot of soup bubbling about 98-99 degrees on the stove. I don’t know what it is about the holidays and me, but when this time of year comes around I think about spices. It’s probably because of the season – winter, colder weather, Kidney time – and spicing up meals enhances all three of these. So once again I give you something about spices, although this time with a different twist -- I’ve found a perfect book not only for your kitchen, but as a lovely gift option as well. We may be coming around full circle with the recent findings that a high-fat breakfast consisting of foods rich in saturated fats such as bacon is actually good for you. Such are the findings of researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham led by senior study author, Martin E. Young, published in the March 30, 2010 issue of the International Journal of Obesity. I find it extremely annoying that the west has gone sweet '" that is, sickly sweet. This occurs not just in mainstream food products, but in health food as well. Until recently, it was easy to find sugarless products in health foods stores, but several years ago when one major brand that contained sugar in every product entered the health food market, all the other brands began to mimic that by adding sugar to their foods, too. Now it's nearly impossible to find salad dressings, crackers, spaghetti sauce and cereals for example, without any sugar in them whatsoever. Today people…

Since then I've often thought of native peoples throughout the world described by early explorers as remarkable specimens of health. These natives ate the purest foods, drank the purest water, breathed the freshest air, and naturally enjoyed plenty of sunlight and exercise. However, they easily fell prey to newly introduced pathogens that decimated their numbers within two or three generations. After the period of feasting from Thanksgiving through Christmas, the New Year leads many of us to think about getting back in shape and losing some of those holiday pounds. There's a wide variety of dieting approaches, ranging from raw food, juice, vegetarian, high carbohydrate, low carbohydrate, low fat, and paleolithic diets, to name only a few. Naturally, the contradictions between these different diets leads to a great deal of confusion. What may work fantastically for one person may spell failure for another. After exploring all of these, it's my opinion that there is no single diet that is right…

Corfu Bay: Practically every square yard of arable land is covered with olive trees or grapevines As someone who's worked in the health field for most of my life, I get to hear about all sorts of fad diets. Many of these come and go and have little basis in the long view history of the dietary habits of humans. One recent contender in the healthful diet arena is the so-called "Mediterranean Diet," based on the culinary traditions of countries around the Mediterranean Sea. On a recent visit to the Aegean Greek island of Corfu, I was able to learn…

How are you doing with your health-centered New Year's resolutions? In my last post on diet and weight loss, I discussed exercise and making reponsible food choices. In this post I'd like to address another option for detoxification, balancing and weight loss: Fasting. All fasting is essentially a process that gives the body a rest and restores normal metabolic function. There are generally two types of fasts: a more extreme detoxifying juice-only fast, and a milder yet still balancing and detoxifying fast based on legumes and grains. Four-Day Apple Juice Fast If you have previously…]]> mtierra@planetherbs.com (Michael Tierra) Michaels Blog Sat, 17 Jan 2009 00:00:00 +0000 New Year's Resolution: don't just lose weight, get healthy http://www.planetherbs.com/michaels-blog/new-years-resolution-dont-just-lose-weight-get-healthy.html http://www.planetherbs.com/michaels-blog/new-years-resolution-dont-just-lose-weight-get-healthy.html It's the new year and guess what's on (almost) everyone's minds: Losing weight and dropping some of the pounds they put on, especially during the holiday season. Of course, there are a number of those 'airy' thin, yin, fiery types who seem to be able to eat as much as they want and hardly put on a pound. You might guess that these types have a high metabolism. This is correct, but is that the whole story? Could be, but these preternaturally skinny types might also be using that high metabolism to digest a diet that's actually helping them to…]]> mtierra@planetherbs.com (Michael Tierra) Michaels Blog Mon, 05 Jan 2009 00:00:00 +0000
